Papers 1912-1920.

Consists of letters and writings of John Drinkwater, 1882-1937, poet and dramatist. The letters are addressed to Harold Monro, 1879-1932, poet, and relate mainly to the publication of writings of Drinkwater, particularly in the Poetry review, established by Monro in 1912, and Poetry & drama, started by him in 1913. Some personal news is also included. Writings of Drinkwater in the collection are: a revised holograph draft of his play "Cophetua"; holograph copies of his poems "The city," "Cottage song," "Elizabeth Ann," "Holiness," and "Of Iles Farm"; and typed copies of his poems, "Portia's housekeeping" and "The Toll-gate house;" and holograph drafts of two prose writings being a review of Drinkwater of "A plea for a wider use of artists and craftsmen: [an address delivered] by William Rothenstein; and Drinkwater's "Dedication" [addressed to William Rothenstein].

Harold Monro was born in Brussels to Scottish parents, and educated at Cambridge. He wrote and published poetry, and founded the influential magazine, Poetry Review. He is best remembered for opening the Poetry Bookshop in London, where he published new collections of poems and created a hospitable environment for poets and readers. Drinkwater, a British playwright and poet, worked for an insurance company. In 1909 he became manager of the Birmingham Repertory Company, and his most successful plays included "Abraham Lincoln," "Mary Stuart," and "Bird in Hand."
